In my latest collection, I delve deeper into the rich narratives of African and Caribbean heritage, using art as a bridge between past and present. This body of work is a celebration of the untold stories of my ancestors, their journeys, and their enduring spirit. Growing up as a first-generation Black British artist, I’ve often felt the pull to explore my identity and heritage through my art. This collection is a culmination of that exploration, where the vibrant cultures of Africa and the Caribbean are given a visual voice.
The pieces in this collection use a mix of textiles, tufting, and bold colors to reflect the complexities of identity. Each work is a tribute to the resilience and creativity of the Caribbean peoples, particularly those from underrepresented regions like Barbados and Antigua. Through vivid hues and intricate textures, I capture their hopes, dreams, and struggles, honoring their contributions to both history and contemporary culture.
The use of gold leaf in some pieces is a deliberate nod to the value and importance of these stories, elevating them to a place of reverence. As I continue to navigate my own narrative, this collection serves as both a personal exploration and a broader reflection on what it means to be part of a diaspora, always connected to my roots while creating new legacies.
The pieces ‘Dense Forest’ and ‘Humid Overgrowth’ are reflected in part of this story.
